Truth or dare has a reputation, and it is mostly deserved. It does not have to be that game. With a list written for a car containing children, and MileSmile’s hands-free Car Mode reading the prompts out loud, it turns into fifteen minutes of everyone laughing at each other, with nobody looking at a screen and the driver still watching the road.
How to play safely on the road
Set the rules once, at the start, and you will not have to argue about them later.
The driver runs the game from the steering wheel controls in Car Mode, so no phone gets passed around the car. Every prompt has to be something that could not embarrass anyone. Nothing that singles a person out, nothing anyone would still be thinking about at dinner. Everybody gets one free pass per round, no explanation required, which is what makes the honest answers possible. And every dare has to be doable sitting down with a seatbelt on. Voices and imagination only, no stunts.
Set up a round with MileSmile
- Open MileSmile and switch to Car Mode so the app reads the prompts aloud.
- Pick one of the lists below, by age or by mood, and save it as a custom deck.
- Set a timer. Twenty-minute bursts between pit stops work better than an open-ended session.
- Rotate who picks the next prompt, so one person does not run the whole game.

Fast formats to keep the energy up
Plain turn-taking gets slow after twenty minutes. Two truths and a dare fixes that: the player picks two truth prompts and one dare, and the car votes on which one they actually have to do. For a lightning round, MileSmile reads three prompts in 60 seconds and the player answers two and passes on one.
A story relay is the one that produces the inside jokes. Take somebody’s truth answer, bolt a dare onto it, and let everyone add a line until it collapses. When the car is getting tired, hand it to the driver instead: they pick gentle dares, get the laughs, and never look away from the road.
Sample 15-minute family round
- Minutes 0-2: Car Mode reads the rules and reminds everyone they have a pass.
- Minutes 2-6: Two truths for the youngest, then one dare for a parent. Make it a silly one.
- Minutes 6-10: Teen truths plus something inventive, like designing a new road trip snack.
- Minutes 10-15: A group lightning round, then everyone names their favorite answer of the day.
Fifteen minutes of this gets you truths that tell you something you did not know, dares that become the running joke for the rest of the drive, and a driver who played the whole game without touching anything.
FAQs
What if someone doesn’t want to answer?
They use their pass, or swap it for a different prompt. No explanation, no pressure, no follow-up questions.
Can we mix age groups?
Yes. The age lists are a starting point, not a rule. Read them and pick what suits the people in your car.
Is this safe for the driver?
Car Mode reads everything aloud and keeps the controls on the steering wheel, so the driver plays without picking up a phone.
